Movie Night – The Changeling
Released just a few months before Kubrick’s immortal The Shining set a new standard for haunted house movies, The Changeling is a mellower, moodier entry in the well-worn genre.
Medak’s film is not particularly concerned with scares, for one. It’s creepy, sure, but this is a movie more interested in building an atmosphere of dread and deep sadness. The Changeling uses familiar ghost story trappings — a spooky old mansion, unspeakable family secrets, a seance gone wrong — to tell a tale of the supernatural rooted in real pain and decidedly human horrors.
