Mr Trash Wheel’s Cash For Trash: A Bottle Bill Demo
Waterfront Partnership’s Healthy Harbor Initiative, along with a coalition of
environmental partners, will host Mr. Trash Wheel’s Cash for Trash, a community
demonstration event supporting Maryland’s proposed Bottle Bill. Attendees are invited
to bring clean and empty plastic, glass and aluminum beverage containers (less than
one gallon) to be counted and redeemed for 10¢ per acceptable container. There is a
1,000-container limit per household.
Waterfront Partnership has held several advocacy and education events—including its
Bottle Bill Rally in Annapolis and Mr. Trash Wheel’s annual Dumpster Dive events—to
highlight the impacts of litter and the need for stronger recycling systems in Maryland. A
statewide Bottle Bill is among the most effective tools available to reduce waste and
keep trash out of local waterways.
Bottle deposit programs significantly cut litter and boost recycling, achieving rates up to
three times higher than states without them. Maryland’s proposed Bottle Bill would
increase the state’s beverage container recycling rate from roughly 25% to more than
90%, with the system funded and operated by beverage producers rather than
taxpayers.
Partner organizations will be on-site to share how this policy works, why it’s effective
and what it could mean for Maryland communities and waterways, and Peabody
Heights Brewery will be offering half off the first draft beer for participants.
